Sponsoring a student with TOIT

Why the need?

Nepal is struggling to provide even the most basic education to its children. A two-tiered system of poorly funded, ill-equipped government schools and expensive private schools is creating a widening gap between wealthy and poor students concerning education and job opportunities. Culture creates another gap, as families able to educate only one child usually send a male to school, leading to a current literacy rate of about 70% for boys but less than 40% for girls. Even the low cost of government schools of about US$ 50 a year is more than many families can afford. As a consequence, children as young as eight years old are working in menial, low paying jobs to add a small amount to their family's income. Private schools, which offer a good education and a chance for a better future, but costing up to US$ 430 a year are completely out of reach of these children.

What does TOIT?

TOIT is working to bridge these gaps by providing scholarships to the students from poverty stricken families, and encouraging parents to send their daughters to school. Scholarships are accomplished by linking worthy, poor children in Nepal with benevolent sponsors around the world. Students are selected for scholarship after an application process and a thorough investigation by our staff. This includes home and also school visits if the student is currently attending school. We assess both the financial need for scholarship as well as the willingness of the student to learn and of the parents to support them with encouragement, time, and a place to study.

How do I profit from sponsoring?

When you sponsor a student with TOIT, you will receive:

  • ... a detailed background report on your student and his/her family including photos.
  • ... letters and artwork from your student 3 times a year.
  • ... academic and attendance reports prepared by our staff after each exam period.
  • ... the opportunity to write to your student and tell them about yourself.
  • ... an annual payment receipt to deduct your donation from taxes.
  • ... the knowledge that you have opened the door to a brighter future for a young child!

If you visit Nepal, you will get a chance to meet your student and his/her family, visit our school and experience the difference your sponsorship has made in your student's life.

How does it work?

A donation of 180 € / 250 US$ represents the average cost of educating a child for 1 year. This includes expenses for study material food, sanitation, teacher's salary, a night guard and operating costs. 20% of the donation will be pooled in a savings account, bridging financial gaps for students in times of missing sponsors. The minimum sponsorship obligation is for one year. However, please feel free to extend your sponsorship beyond the first year and guarantee your child a continuous education.
