Volunteering with TOIT

Volunteering with TOIT offers you a chance to make a personal difference in the lives of our children while enriching your own life! Whether you are coming to Nepal or able to help us in your own country, we have projects that await your energy and enthusiasm. Your program may last from a few days or weeks, to six months or a year! We will ensure that your time and energy are well spent. Volunteering is a great way to live in and learn about another culture and an experience you will treasure all your life!

Benefits of Volunteering With TOIT

As a TOIT Volunteer, you will be living and working in beautiful, historic, Old Bhaktapur, home to many cultural, architectural and historical wonders.

  • You can explore its brick- and stone-paved streets and alleyways, shop in the many open-air markets, or sit on the steps of a three hundred-year-old temple and watch the vibrant street life.
  • Festivals are frequent, colorful, and occasionally riotous! See the link for a description and calendar.
  • Its many Hindu and Buddhist temples and shrines, the old Royal Palace, Golden Gate, and carved “Peacock Window are among the things that led to Bhaktapur being declared a World Heritage Site in 1978.
  • Although Bhaktapur is old, it has modern amenities like mobile phone service, Internet cafés, and convenient bus connections to Kathmandu and beyond. Bhaktapur’s progressive Municipal Council has worked to develop good water, sewer and electrical systems, and street crime is almost unknown here.

Some volunteer agencies charge US$1000 or more for a 3-month placement, and include costly tourist services and activities. TOIT charges you nothing for your stay with us. Our efforts focus on children. We do not arrange trekking or sightseeing tours, but can direct you to reliable, economical guides and tour operators.

By November 2005 we may soon have simple accommodations available for some volunteers, but for now, we do ask you to pay your own room and board. When you visit us as a TOIT Volunteer, we will help you arrange housing, meals, and transportation at a reasonable cost. Please contact us for detail

Some of the options are…

  • Guesthouse accommodations : Room with either shared or private Western style bath and toilet, hot water, Nepali meals in restaurant and
  • laundry service. US$4-US$7/day. Discounts for longer stays may be available.
  • Room rentals : Single rooms range in style and price, most with shared Nepali-style bath. US$10-US$30 a month.
  • Flat rentals : 3 to 5 rooms, ranging in style from modern to Medieval! Some with western bath. Occasionally available for long term stays. US$50-US$100 a month.
  • Meals : can be eaten out or you can learn to cook Nepali cuisine! Most rented rooms allow cooking. Setting up a “Nepali kitchen” is easy and fun and can be done for under US$200. Food prices are low in Nepal and you can eat very well for US$2 a day!
  • Transportation : A bicycle is a great way to get around Bhaktapur, and we can help you with rental or purchase of a dependable bike. Taxis and busses are plentiful and we will show you the stations and schedules.

We offer you free Nepali language classes throughout your stay: Nepali is easy to learn and local people will be thrilled if you can speak to them in their language. We have teachers who can take you from speaking simple phrases to reading and writing in a short time!

Our Staff will be here to help you settle in, learn all the tricks of Nepali life, and introduce you to Nepal’s people and culture. We want your stay with us to be pleasant and productive. If you have any questions about living in Nepal please use our LINK Volunteering With TOIT form to let us know.
